How to Play Marbles, a Timeless Game

We sell marbles and it is fun to hear stories about marble play from days gone by.  We are asked, “How do you play marbles?” A game of ancient Rome to modern times. So here is how – have fun!

What you will need

  1. 2 or more players
  2. 10-15 marbles
  3. 1 or more larger “shooter” marble
  4. A circle 3 feet in diameter drawn with chalk or laid out with string on a flat surface indoors or outside.

Rules and play

  1. Decide ahead of time if you are playing for “keeps” or if the marbles will be retained by the owner after the game is over.
  2. Scatter 10 to 15 marbles within the circle.
  3. First player kneels or positions themselves outside of the circle and “shoots” their shooter marble from their fist by flicking their thumb with the goal of knocking as many marbles as possible outside of the ring.  That player retains those marbles and gets another turn until her or she misses.  Then the next player takes a turn.
  4. Each player takes a turn until there are no marbles left within the circle.
  5. The winner is the one with the most marbles.
  6. If you are playing for “keeps,” each player keeps the marbles that they won.  If not, the marbles are returned to their owner(s).
